Cathy Drinkwater: Lifetime Sports Volunteerism
Submitted By Lisa Wallis on Thursday, February 08, 2018
Congratulations Cathy- well deserved!!!!! Here is the nomination letter that was sent in for Cathy.

The Brantford Girls Hockey Association would like to nominate Cathy Drinkwater for The George Jones Memorial Award (Lifetime Sports Volunteerism Award). Cathy is retired from policing after working with the OPP for 15 years, and Brantford Police for 21 years.

Cathy is currently the Registrar for the BGHA and has been for the past 10 years. Cathy is a huge part of our association and always goes above and beyond to help anyone. Cathy is the go-to-person of our association, after being involved for so long, she is like a walking OWHA handbook and we all appreciate her knowledge of the game. She does not have a child involved in our association, she volunteers because she loves the sport and wants to give back. She spends countless hours volunteering with our association, which does not go unnoticed. When Cathy walks into the Gretzky Centre, everyone knows who she is and she stops to say hi to each one of them. She has a heart of gold and makes time to try and get to know anyone that she comes in contact with. She is a big part of our Ice Kittens program, and has helped our registration numbers year after year. She is also currently involved with starting a Tyke program for our association, which will help tremendously with the jump from Ice Kittens to Novice. She really is an irreplaceable member of our association; someone who makes the association the best that it can be.

Cathy has been involved with sports through her 3 kids throughout their lives, volunteering and helping out whenever she could. Her children grew up playing for Brantford Minor Hockey, Stoney Creek Hockey and Hamilton Hawks Hockey. She has volunteered on the Stoney Creek Hockey Tournament Committee, Drinking and Driving Committee, Retired Policing Committee, Autism Speaks Canada events, and of course Brantford Girls Hockey Association. She has also volunteered with school committee boards while her children attended elementary school for 8 years.

Cathy’s sister passed away from a drunk driving accident, so volunteering on the Drinking and Driving Committee is something that is very important to her; she has been on their board for over 15 years.  She has volunteered with Autism Speaks Canada events for the past 3 years.

When Cathy volunteers to do something she puts everything she has into it, she has so much heart for everyone around her. She always has the player’s best interest in mind, and will do any research needed to make sure the board has the information needed to make any decisions. Even though Cathy is retired and loves to travel she takes her volunteering very serious and is always around to help, even while in another country.

We can’t say enough about Cathy and we know she will continue to volunteer for different committees throughout her retirement, and we are so happy that one of those associations is ours.
