Next season, the Brantford Girls Hockey
Association will be celebrating their 50th year in operation!
Girls’ hockey in Brantford originated in
1974 when registration was opened to girls age 7 – 18. 49 girls paid their $15.00 annual fee (50
cents per practice and Brantford had a girls hockey league! The league began with 3 hours of ice time per
week.
Mayor Charles Bowen dropped the puck at the
first game on September 21, 1974.
The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association
(OWHA) was formed in 1975.
In 1982, the ‘Female Council’ of the CHA
was formed. This year also saw the OWHA
and Brantford WHA host the first women’s National Championship. This was the first year of the now Walter
Gretzky Tournament.
