The Greater Toronto Hockey League's Development 1 is the certification required by Hockey Canada for head coaches of all rep level hockey (A, AA, AAA). Upon completion of the D1 course, a coach will become D1 trained. Full certification at the D1 level requires the completion of follow-up components which include a Making Ethical Decisions post clinic online evaluation through the Coaching Association of Canada’s website, the completion of a written assignment reviewed by a GTHL mentor, and an evaluation by GTHL mentor.
The GTHL includes the Hockey Canada Body Checking course in our Development 1. This course does not include Hockey Canada's Harassment and Abuse certification (Speak-out).
This 2-day course includes topics such as; team building with athletes, skills and progression, body checking, season planning, practice design, goalkeeping, offense and defense, individual/team tactics, and practice to game transitions. On-ice training with coaches designing and delivering the above topics is also part of this course.
