2018/19 – Season Highlight Recap!

Watching the growth and caliber of female hockey is exciting.  Every female hockey player is a winner!  All parents/family/fans cheer for their daughter’s team to succeed.

While not all teams this season won championships, the Board looks at the Association as a whole to ensure all girls have the opportunity to play quality hockey.

The Association is also celebrating 45 years in operation in 2019.
.

Last season’s (2017/18) #1 priority of parents was development.  This became a priority of the Board at the beginning of the 2018/19 Season.

The Player Development providers for this season was STOKE Strengthening and Conditioning Team for the Representative League and Rob Crocock was added to the House League development.

Cro’s Nest continued to provide Goalie Development for both Representative and House League.

Feedback from Parents was that they were unaware of what was happening within the Association.  While we do rely on coaching teams to keep us informed about their teams, there has been a strong effort to ensure global awareness of team and association activities.

BGHA had another successful Walter Gretzky Tournament this season with the highest number of GOLD Medals won by Ice Cats in both the Representative and House Leagues.

This season the Board re-started the Volunteer Appreciation Awards.  The last season for this to occur was in 2011.

The Board also explored the interest of an Intermediate Rep team for 2019/20 season.  The last season that the BGHA had an Intermediate Rep Team was in 2012/13 season.

Beyond the control of the Board, there was some loss of Ice Time within the Brant County Arenas.  This has been a focus throughout this season going into next season.

Representative League.

2018/19 saw the most girls come out for Rep tryouts – a total of 243 players.  148 were returning Ice Cats and 95 players were from outside associations.

This was the first season that the BGHA had 3 Atom teams and the 1st time at having an Atom A team.  The Board is hopeful for a Peewee A and Bantam AA team this season, a decision made by coaches.

Tournaments:  In 2017/18 there were 3 Rep Teams who won GOLD in 5 tournaments; this season there were 5 Rep Teams who won GOLD in 6 tournaments.

LLFHL Championship Weekend:  In 2017/18 there was 1 Rep Team who went into the Championship Weekend and they won!  This season there are 2 Rep Teams going into the Championship Weekend.  While both teams played for the Bronze Medal, we were unable to win a medal.

OWHA Provincials:  In 2017/18 we had three teams play in the Provincials.  This season we have 4 teams going to the Provincials.  There was one team that made it to the quarter finals, but was unable to move further.  The last season to have an OWHA Provincial win was in 2016/17 with our Senior A team.

WOGHL Championship:  In 2017/18, our Atom C team won this Championship (the last win was in 2012/13).  This season our Atom C team played for the Championship and won in 2 straight wins.

GHWHL Championship:  This season the Senior A Ice Cats won the GHWHL Championship Weekend.

House League

2018/19 saw 98 players come out for House League.  The highest showing was in Midget/Intermediate with 33 players.  The League started the season with 88 players and ended with 83.  There were two Midget teams according to the numbers that came out but due to injuries and low player follow through, this became problematic.

Tournaments:  Last season there were no tournament wins for House League.  This season there was 2 Ice Cat teams win GOLD in 4 tournaments.

GHGHL Playoffs:  Last season we did not have any House League Team win the GHGHL Playoffs.  This season there was one House League Team who was on top of the Regular Season and won the GHGHL Playoffs within their Pod.

There is no documentation available to indicate any previous seasons where one of our House League teams won the GHGHL Playoffs.

Super Sunday:  Last season there was one team who won their Super Sunday division.  The last season prior to this for a Super Sunday win that is documented was in 2012/13.

This season we again had a team who won Super Sunday.

Tykes

This is the first season for our Ice Cat Tykes.  There were 21 players in this development league.  Parent feedback received indicates that this was a very successful initiative this season.

Ice Kittens

The BGHA has been able to consistently provide 2 Sessions each season for Ice Kittens.  With the development of the Tyke program, we saw more 3 and 4 year old future Ice Cats this season.
